On April 29, 2025, the inaugural meeting of the Orthodox Legal Society of Tampa Bay was held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater, Florida. The Orthodox Legal Society was formed through the Tampa Bay District Council as an idea to have legal professionals come together in fellowship to address issues they face in their profession and find ways to resolve these issues through Christ. Reverend Father Athanasios Haros, Protopresbyter of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tarpon Springs, along with her Honorable Theodora Komninos, President of the Parish Council at St. Stefanos Greek Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg, led the initiative in forming the Legal Society. During their discussions, Fr. Haros and Judge Komninos believed that it was ideal to open up the Legal Society to Orthodox judges, lawyers, law students, paralegals, police officers, probation officers and anyone involved in the legal profession. They believed that all of these different individuals and professionals face similar issues dealing with the Court system and that they should all be involved in finding solutions through Christ together. The inaugural meeting was held with much success as over 40 legal professionals attended the first meeting. Fr. Haros and Judge Komninos discussed the formation of the Legal Society which led to a fruitful conversation amongst the participants about various issues they had already faced; with some of the more seasoned professionals giving advice to the newer attorneys and students who were present. Fr. Haros and Judge Komninos were joined at the meeting by Joan Berg of Orthodox Christian Attorney Network (OCAN), who spoke about the mission and purpose of their organization. All of the participants were excited about the future of the society and looking forward to the next meeting on September 11, along with the upcoming community service project the society is planning.
