Serving Athens, Georgia, and the surrounding area, Saint Philothea Greek Orthodox Church was founded in the 1970s. The founding families, Dekazos, Galis, Gallis, Parthemos, and Vicallis, were guided in their endeavors by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios and Father Petros Kopsahilis.
Saint Philothea’s congregation has conducted services in homes and university campus churches; Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, and Baptist churches. Saint Philothea Greek Orthodox Church has plans to build its first building, a multipurpose facility with a dedicated chapel and a 250-seat banquet hall.
Currently under the spiritual guidance of Father Anthony Salzman, and administrative leadership of Parish Council President Kurt Knisely, Saint Philothea Greek Orthodox Church serves all Orthodox people including Greek, Romanian, Bulgarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Albanian, Serbian, and Antiochian. It actively offers a college student ministry, catechism classes, a senior citizen group, retreats, food collections for the poor, a festival, and adult education.
Saint Philothea Greek Orthodox Church proudly states that it is “the local Eucharistic, sacramental community of the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith in Northeast Georgia, organized under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Our work and ministry is to proclaim and to practice the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in accordance with the One, Holy, Orthodox, Catholic and Apostolic Christian Faith through worship, education and outreach.”
