Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

Fort Myers, FL

In 1973, a small group of faithful began to hold meetings at various homes and restaurants to develop a strategy to begin a church in Fort Myers. Early services were held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church on Sanibel Island.

By August 1976, after several locations were used for the Sunday services, the property on Cypress Lake Drive was purchased. Later that same year, Missionary Parish status was granted. In April 1977, the first service was conducted in a modular building.

A few important dates are included below:

October 1, 1976: First priest appointed: Fr. Arthur K. Kontinos
October 1, 1978: Groundbreaking ceremonies
April 15, 1979: Thyranoixia of new church
July 24, 1983: Groundbreaking for social hall
February 19, 1984: Social hall dedication

On January 17, 1993, the church was consecrated. Today it serves over 400 families. Additionally, a special ministry to those who live here a few months of the year is a focus. Plans for the complete 10 acres of the current site are being looked at. Most importantly, beyond the bricks and mortar, church services and programs are the number-one priority.

Today the clergy—Protopresbyter Fr. George P. Savas, Very Rev. Archimandrite Gregory Hutton, and Dn. John Howard—minister to the faithful in the greater Fort Myers area.
